Meet the Band
This month’s Student Spotlight features Korka, a student-led band known for their experimental sound and strong sense of collaboration. The group includes fourth-year student David Lazarov, alongside bandmates Nenad Stojanov (Neno) a second-year university student; Anastasija Stoimenovska, also a second-year university student; Viki Petrova, a first-year university student; and Boris Medarski (Boro), a fourth-year high school student. They were chosen because of their creativity and their efforts to bring people together through music.

David, Boro, and Neno have been long-time friends, and their shared love of music brought them together to form Korka. The band draws inspiration from bands like Sonic Youth, the No Wave scene of the 1970s, and early punk bands. They were motivated by the experimental nature of 1980s noise rock, a genre that blends traditional rock with unconventional sounds, creating fresh layers and textures that give their music a unique edge.
The Sound of Korka

Korka’s music can be described as “controlled noise and chaos,” blending rock, 1970s influences, and youth culture into a sound that is both fun to play and exciting to listen to. The band thrives on experimenting and collaborating, with each member bringing unique ideas to the group. Beyond creating music together, they are motivated by the chance to impact the Balkan music scene, performing and touring throughout the region.
One of their proudest moments was performing at the PIN Music Conference in mkc, Skopje; where they shared their energetic and experimental style with a wider audience. David also teased an unreleased song featuring sounds the band had never incorporated before, showing their commitment to pushing musical boundaries and exploring new creative directions.

Korka takes a DIY approach to their music, teaching themselves how to record and produce tracks with minimal equipment. This hands-on method allows them to maximize production quality while keeping costs low.
Producing their own music gives them full creative control, ensuring that every song reflects the band’s vision and experimental identity.
Looking ahead, Korka hopes to go on tour, release new music accompanied by high-quality videos, and expand their audience beyond the Balkans. They are currently working on an EP and preparing to embark on a European tour that would expand their music further into Europe.
Inspiring Through Music

Korka hopes their music encourages listeners to explore their own creativity. They want people to see music as a free form of expression, where individuals can celebrate their own identities while appreciating the identities of others. The band also hopes their experimental approach inspires fans to try new ways of expressing themselves through sound.
Why Music Matters
Korka believes music is an important outlet for young people to express themselves in creative and unconventional ways. Through music, youth can connect with like-minded perspectives, find inspiration, and feel encouraged to take action toward their own goals and dreams.
