Music is a powerful part of a nation’s identity and culture. It reflects the language, traditions, and emotions of its people. However, in Macedonia, local music often does not receive the appreciation it deserves, as foreign music dominates public attention.
In Macedonia, Western music, especially from the United States and The United Kingdom, strongly influences young audiences through global trends, streaming platforms, and social media. Music from neighboring Balkan countries such as Serbia, Bulgaria, and Greece is also commonly played in public areas in Macedonia including clubs, restaurants, stores and more. Although talented Macedonian artists like Karolina Gočeva, Jovan Jovanov, and Slatkaristika are played in Macedonian homes, they rarely achieve wider international success due to the domination of Western music. The people of Macedonia appreciate pop and hip hop music as it is more mainstream, but there many Macedonians who prefer other music genres such as rock with great Macedonian bands and individual artists. Some popular Macedonian bands and artists include, "Arhangel", "Mizar" and "Leb i sol". Since Macedonian music is not commonly played, many young people are unaware of those artists. Instead of fully embracing and promoting what is uniquely theirs, many Macedonians tend to reshape their music to imitate foreign styles, believing that outside trends are automatically better or cooler. This mindset limits the development of an authentic and confident national music scene, appreciation for our native language and prevents local talent from reaching its full potential.
Additionally, many Macedonians listen to more foreign music because foreign artists are promoted much more worldwide. International singers have big marketing teams, expensive music videos, and millions of followers on social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. When a new foreign song is released, it quickly becomes popular through trends, challenges, and viral videos. This entices young Macedonians to prioritize foreign-based music genres in order to stay updated on mainstream pop-culture. Many Macedonian songs are good quality, but due to the lack of global marketing, promotion and access, they often do not receive enough attention online to gain significant traction. As a result, many teenagers choose foreign music simply because it seems more popular, modern, and exciting. We need to listen and promote local music to support Macedonian artists so they have the following and capital to keep making music. When we stream songs by Macedonian singers or follow them on social media, it gives them the motivation to keep producing strong cultural works. If we only follow famous foreign stars who already have millions of followers, our own talented people will never get the chance to grow.
The most significant reason that most Macedonian teens are not interested in Macedonian music is the fact that they view it as out of fashion and low-quality compared to Serbian and English pop music. A large number of teenagers also feel that Macedonian music does not sound as exciting compared to the catchy beats and high-quality production of foreign music. For instance, when using Spotify and TikTok (popular music and social media applications) teens find that only songs prevalent within Western pop-culture are marketed and featured to them, preventing Macedonian artists and songs from reaching mainstream audiences.. Therefore, Macedonian music is caught in a cycle of stagnation, frustrating Macedonian artists and hindering overall cultural appreciation.
Some people may argue that Macedonian music is still widely listened to in Macedonia because it plays a major role in the country’s cultural life. Macedonian songs are commonly heard at weddings, family celebrations, festivals, and national holidays, showing that people still value and enjoy local music. In addition, Macedonian music is frequently broadcasted on Macedonian television and radio channels, and many domestic artists continue to release new songs and perform concerts despite challenges. Some may also argue that the presence of Macedonian music in traditional and social settings proves it remains relevant and popular among the population, especially among older generations who prefer music in their native language.
While Macedonian music is still present at weddings, holidays, and on local media stations, it is not widely listened to on a daily basis, especially among younger generations. Furthermore, the fact that Macedonian music is more popular among older generations may actually highlight the growing gap between traditional and modern preferences. If younger audiences are increasingly choosing foreign music over local artists, this could suggest that Macedonian music is losing influence in everyday life. Therefore, while it remains culturally significant, its overall popularity and impact particularly among youth, may not be as strong as it appears. In the age of social media, the longevity and reach of Macedonian music is rapidly decreasing. As a nation, we must play Macedonian music over foreign artists to solidify its place in Macedonian culture and preserve our native language.
